The Adoration of the Magi by Fra Angelico and Fra Lippi

A crowd of ecstatic pilgrims –richly dressed nobles and humble peasants – awaits its turn to worship little Jesus. The long procession starts from a narrow path in the upper right, continues behind a mountain and then pours out from a setting with an arch, making its way through the crèche. 

In contrast to the vibrating surrounding, there is a moment of sacred silence, when the Magi leans forward to embrace the foot of the newborn baby. Mary and Jesus, are painted by Fra Angelico with the serenity of angels, while Joseph next to them, painted more earthly by Fra Lippi, attends the sacred scene. 

The focal point of the painting is a peacock in stunning colors, perched on the roof of the crèche, a symbol of eternal life, recalling the immortality granted to humanity by the birth of Jesus.
