Wisteria sinensis, known as Chinese wisteria, is a species of flowering plant native to China. Also known as wisteria or wisteria it is a hardy climbing plant with beautiful hanging flowers in the form of a bunch that create a unique aesthetic effect in purple.
Our luminous ornament borrows the cascade of wisteria that frames the idyllic view of Oyster Bay (circa 1908). Louis C. Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) designed this stained glass window to decorate the Manhattan residence of silk manufacturer William C. Skinner, whose family home in Massachusetts was called Wistariahurst. However, the picturesque window view suggested an Oyster Bay association for its similarity to the view of the North Shore of Long Island, where the Gilded Age visionary had recently built a country estate.
