Elegant necklace with crescent motif borrowed from an elaborate gold and glass ornament (11th century) possibly from Syria. The original is adorned with a smaller crescent, spiral elements and a pair of facing birds – popular in jewelery from the time of the Fatimid dynasty (909-1171) – one of which even retains its luxurious blue cloisonné enamel. In the Byzantine world it was a luxury item possibly exported to Syria and Egypt. The contemporary design reinterprets the ornate object in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (The MET) by replacing the blue glass with exuberant lapis lazuli.
