The Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, also called the Order of the Templar and whose members are known as Knights Templar, was one of the most powerful Christian Military Orders of the Middle Ages. It was founded in 1118 by nine French Knights led by Hugo Payns after the First Crusade. Its purpose was to protect the lives of Christians who were pilgrims to Jerusalem after the First Crusade.
The Catholic Church recognized it as an Order during the Council of Troyes in 1129. The Order grew rapidly in size and power. The Knights Templar were Knights of God, honor of the Church and Christianity. They used as a badge a white cloak with a red paté cross. Militarily its members were among the best trained units participating in the Crusades.
