Greek flag lapel pin. Flags and banners with the symbol of the cross were first used by the Byzantine Empire during the time of Constantine the Great. It consists of nine equidistant, horizontal and alternating white and blue parallel stripes, as well as a white cross within a blue square. The nine stripes correspond to the historical phrase "Liberty or Death".
