A wonderful seascape by the 19th century Greek painter
Konstantinos Volanakis (1837-1907) counts among the most prominent representatives of Realism in the field of Greek painting. Having studied in the Munich Academy of Art, he belongs to the so-called “School of Munich” that includes major figures of the 19th century Greek painting, such as Lytras, Gyzis and Jacobides.
His greatest source of inspiration was the sea. Charmed by boats, sailing ships, open seas and harbours, he excelled in marine landscapes and is mainly known as a painter of seascapes.
His work “Sailing Ships”, an oil on canvas painted during the Munich period, is a perfect example of his skill in creating wonderfully balanced compositions. The central theme is a large sailboat with open sails, with several ships in the background. An excellent master of colours, Volanakis features the deep blue of the sea and the icing blue of the cloudy sky, introducing also wisely two details in bright red. The human element, adds vitality in the composition.
The original artwork, belonging to a private collection, has been reproduced for the present edition in only 1.490 copies worldwide, offered with a wooden frame. A precious addition to a collection of 19th century Greek painters!
